Master the Art of Flash Writing

A 4-Week Flash Writing Workshop

Thursdays, May 8 - 29, 6-9 PM

Ready to unlock the power of brevity? This four-week workshop, led by Nina Barufaldi and Leah Scott-Kirby—co-founders of The Practice of Writing and graduates of the prestigious Stonecoast MFA program—explores the exciting possibilities of flash writing. From fiction and nonfiction to memoir, speculative nonfiction, monologue, and prose poetry, you’ll learn to craft powerful, concise pieces under 1,000 words. Drawing inspiration from celebrated writers like Lydia Davis, George Saunders, and Amy Hempel, you’ll build your skills and find your creative voice.

Through engaging examples, fast-paced creative prompts, and hands-on revision techniques, you’ll create a fresh collection of flash pieces and develop practical submission strategies for literary journals and contests. Whether you’re starting your writing journey or refining your craft, this course will help you master the art of saying more with less.

$240 Members/$410 Nonmembers

Nina Barufaldi (Bar Harbor, ME) is a multi-genre writer whose teaching blends sharp creativity with thoughtful exploration of truth and storytelling. She was longlisted for the American Short(er) Story Prize (2021) and the First Pages Prize for Nonfiction (2023). Nina’s story “MGGA” is forthcoming in After Dinner Conversation in April 2025, and she has been accepted into the Chateau D’Orquevaux Artist Residency in France.

Leah Scott-Kirby (South Lake Tahoe, CA) is a writer and creative consultant whose work focuses on emotionally resonant narratives. Leah served as Editor-in-Chief of the Stonecoast Review, where she oversaw the publication of dynamic, boundary-pushing works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Her teaching emphasizes practical revision techniques and strategies for submitting work to literary journals. Leah has also been accepted into the Chateau D’Orquevaux Artist Residency in France, and her story “Marbled Bellies” will be published in Flash Phantom Mag in December 2024.

Together, Nina and Leah foster a vibrant, supportive space where writers are encouraged to take creative risks, refine their craft, and build lasting confidence in their voice.
