A 5-Week Nonfiction Workshop
Wednesdays: May 7 - June 4, 6-9 PM
In a piece of creative nonfiction, the writer exists in at least two ways: as the character on the page, as the narrator, and potentially countless other versions of self. Learning to distinguish between your I-Character and Narrator is the work of a CNF writer, and a skill students will practice in this 5 week class. Over the course of 3 essay assignments, students will write about the self, the self as they relate to another person, and the self as they relate to our larger society. Craft/inspiration readings from essayists such as Hanif Abdurraqib, Kim McLarin, Roxane Gay, and Audre Lorde. Each essay assignment will be to create drafts up to about 800 words, and each student can expect to receive at least one, on-the-spot workshop (their writing read in class, with classmates and instructor providing immediate verbal feedback and conversation on what's working and what needs work).
