An IN-PERSON Business of Writing Presentation for Writers of MG, YA and Childrens Books
All Levels
Even in the age of BookTok, Instagram and Facebook, creators of books for young readers rarely have the opportunity to reach their audience without some adult intermediation. Aspiring writers need to hook agents and editors fast, but that's just the beginning of a book's journey through the publishing process. Learn from an experienced book-review editor what reviewers and librarians look for as they evaluate children’s and young adult books for coverage and for collections so that your books might find their ways to the right readers.
+ PLEASE NOTE This talk will occur in-person at USM’s Portland Campus. The week of the talk, participants will receive the exact location on the USM campus.
After 13 years as young readers' editor at Kirkus Reviews, a national book-review outlet, Vicky Smith returned to her first love, Maine libraries, in 2021. She has served on numerous young readers' award committees, including Newbery, Caldecott, and Sibert, and she continues to review for Kirkus, Horn Book, and Audiofile. When she's not reading or being a librarian, she tends to her backyard bees in South Portland.
