The aphorism “All writing is rewriting,” or some variation on it, has been attributed to many authors, from Truman Capote to Vladimir Nabokov. Most writers find this pithy assertion is all too true: only when the messy first draft is finished can the real work of finding a story or novel’s true potential begin.
In this workshop, attendees will explore the re-envisioning that goes into thoughtful revision of a first draft. Using readings from Raymond Carver, Zadie Smith, and others, the instructor will lead discussions of the lesser-known tools of revision that professional writers employ. Attendees will use in-class exercises and practical techniques to revise their manuscripts, with the goals of creating conflict, exploring character motivations, and streamlining language.
The class and instructor will also offer feedback on an excerpt from each attendee’s work.
