'It's Like Being Alive Twice': Using Images to Bring Your Poems to Life

An IN-PERSON Poetry Workshop

ALL LEVELS

A friend of the Chinese poet Tu Fu, said to him (about a poem), “It is like being alive twice.” This person intuitively understood the power of the poetic image (and even created a pretty good one, as well). The poetic image makes an argument without arguing, proves itself without proof, and compels without compelling anyone. That’s what images do for you. In this generative workshop, we will talk about the surprising complexity of this seemingly simple concept and develop our own images and poems in response.

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur in-person at USM in Portland, Maine. The week of the workshop, attendees will receive the exact location of the workshop as well as parking info.

Jeffrey Thomson is a poet, memoirist, translator, and editor, and the author of ten books including Museum of Objects Burned by the Souls in Purgatory and Half/Life: New and Selected Poems from Alice James Books, The Belfast Notebooks, The Complete Poems of Catullus, and From the Fishouse. He has been an NEA Fellow, the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar in Creative Writing at the Seamus Heaney Poetry Centre at Queen’s University Belfast, and the Hodson Trust-John Carter Brown Fellow at Brown University. He is currently professor of creative writing at the University of Maine Farmington.
