A 2 Part Workshop on Creating a Dummy Book
Prep Session ON ZOOM, Wednesday November 1st
Workshop IN-PERSON, Saturday November 4th
ALL LEVELS
Attention creators of self/hybrid/traditionally published children's picture books and aspiring picture book author/illustrators! This is a dynamic, hands-on, production-oriented workshop for you!
The 'dummy book' is an essential tool, a tangible mock up of your book to explore page turn, visual and sound pacing, and provide a fuller appreciation of your picture book project as a multi-dimensional art form. A dummy book in hand gives your book dream an early-form physical presence and the ability to be read aloud, and frees you from the flatness of the page and/or screen.
This is a two-part experience with a prep session on Zoom and then a facilitated work session in Portland where you dedicate the full time to your own project. We'll meet together first via Zoom to make sure everyone has the gear they'll need for the in-person workshop, and then we'll jump right in for a roundtable creative session in Portland. I'll supply book-making materials (paper, pencils, glue sticks, stapler/hole punch and thread, etc) but you're welcome to bring favorite drawing materials-we'll discuss this on the Zoom.
You'll leave the workshop with at least one dummy book in the style and scale best fitting your process, plus art direction for your art sample(s) and a planning strategy for your book project as needed. Ideal for first time author/illustrators, and creators who need a jump start on a book project that's written but not drawn, or languishing in thumbnails.
+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop has two parts. The first is ONLINE Wednesday, November 1st on Zoom (from 6-8 pm). The second is IN-PERSON at USM Portland on Saturday, November 4th from 10 AM-2 PM. The week of the workshop, attendees will be sent the link to the prep session and the exact location of the class.
+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).
