An IN-PERSON Poetry Workshop
ALL LEVELS
"When we find in poetry that which gives us a momentary existence on an exquisite plane, is it necessary to ask the meaning of a poem?" -Wallace Steves.
In this workshop, we will consider the ancient association of the lyric with charm, prayer, and incantation and experiment with reading and writing poems as a way of working with our minds. What happens to thought as it slows down to stay with the words of a poem, or when it surrenders to sound? What happens to feeling when we pay the kind of attention poetic looking and listening require? This generative workshop will combine reading, meditation, and writing, allowing participants to work with these modes of attention to create their own daily practice of being in the world. We'll read poems by poets such as Emily Dickinson, Kobayashi Issa, Ross Gay, W.S. Merwin, Wallace Stevens, and Wong May.
+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur in-person at USM in Portland, Maine. The week of the workshop, attendees will receive the exact location of the workshop as well as parking info.
Kristen Case’s first poetry collection, Little Arias, was published by New Issues in 2015. Her second collection, Principles of Economics, was published by Switchback Books in 2018. She won the Maine Literary Award in Poetry for both collections. She lives in Farmington, Maine.
