Poetics of the Mundane: Writing the Process Poem

A Poetry Workshop

The process poem isn't an official term. But you've likely seen this type of poem before, where the poet takes a regular task of some sort and uses it as the vehicle for telling a secondary narrative. Poems often have multiple modes they're trying to access, multiple points they're trying to make, but juggling two distinct narratives and making sure they intersect enough to keep them as one poem can sometimes be a task in an of itself. In this workshop we'll look at poems from Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Patricia Smith, Seamus Heaney, among others. We'll examine the benefit of writing a process poem and how it acts as a container, as a type of form for sometimes harder to tell stories. Process poems might seem simple at first glance, but they're layered poems with the potential to tease out of you a deeper level of storytelling you might not have accessed otherwise.
