Shopping Mall Trees: Innovations in Place-Based Writing

  • Bangor Public Library & Online 145 Harlow Street Bangor, ME, 04401 United States (map)

A 2-Day Hybrid Multigenre Workshop

Explore the art of documentary writing through the work of Bhanu Kapil's Humanimal, Xavier de Maistre’s Voyage Around My Room,  CA Conrad's "Shopping Mall Trees", Kia Sand's Remember To Wave and other innovative works in this genre that see place-based writing as a blend of journalism and memoir. The documentary mode is one that has the facility to work with subjects of self alongside liberatory, decolonial frameworks. It's a very cool way to write: collaborating with the moment and collaborating with Bangor. As part of our work, we will explore place-based writing, research, take mini field trips and work on exercises like an in-depth tour of our living rooms. This is a perfect workshop for exploring contemporary nature or travel writing as well as shaking off writers block, expanding techniques for innovation and building a toolkit for new thinking and new writing. All are welcome!
