A 1-Day Picture Book Writing Workshop
Saturday, July 26, 10 AM - 1 PM
This beginner-level workshop is an introduction to the art of writing picture books. We’ll explore what makes this format so unique, dynamic, and essential in the world of children’s literature. Together, we'll discuss the interplay of text and illustrations, the importance of reading both old and new picture books, and key elements like voice, vocabulary, page and word counts, and illustration/art notes.
Participants are asked to bring a favorite picture book to use as a mentor text. We’ll analyze what makes these books effective and how they can inspire your own stories. I’ll also share additional resources—books, videos, websites, and groups—to support you on your writing journey. We’ll use prompts to brainstorm story ideas, and while we’ll touch on possible paths to publication, our primary focus will be on understanding what makes a picture book manuscript truly work.
This workshop is designed to be interactive, supportive, and fun, with a mix of large-group discussions, individual work, and small-group collaboration. You’ll leave with a solid grasp of the basics—and hopefully some story ideas and the inspiration to write (and read!) lots of picture books.
