Metaphor as Transformation

  • Lithgow Public Library Augusta (map)

An IN-PERSON Poetry Presentation in Augusta, Maine

ALL LEVELS

The metaphor in poetry has magical properties. In fact, the poet Annie Finch often quotes revered author and British occultist Dion Fortune who once said “magic is the art of changing consciousness at will.” The metaphor shifts how we perceive, and become aware of, our surroundings—it has the ability to refresh language and make words come alive. Metaphor makes visible the interconnectedness of all things, and when rendered well (serving to illuminate and clarify, versus obfuscate and abstract), the metaphor functions as a portal out of sanctioned boundaries of realities into ways of being that are nuanced and nonlinear.

In this presentation, participants will explore, through readings and writing exercises, the various ways to wield the metaphor’s magic.

+ PLEASE NOTE This presentation will occur in-person at Lithgow Public Library in Augusta, Maine.
