Madness, Metaphor and Magic

  • Farmington Public Library 117 Academy Street Farmington, ME, 04938 United States (map)

A Poetry Workshop

Level: All Levels

Plato called metaphor madness and for its use he kicked the poets out of his Republic. The French philosopher, Michel Foucault, calls metaphor a derangement of the senses. Yet, metaphors are fundamental to the way good poems work and they make the magic leaping power of poetry possible. In this generative workshop, we will think about what metaphor actually is and how it works and develop poems based on our own metaphorical imaginings.

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur in person at Farmington Public Library in Farmington, Maine. All participants must be vaccinated to attend—email a photo of your vaccination card to programs@mainewriters.org in order to register.
