The Art of the Humor Piece: Writing Short Satire

  • Mechanics' Hall 519 Congress Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

A 2-Day Nonfiction Workshop

2 Saturdays, February 22 & March 1, 11 AM - 2 PM

“Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds.” -Clive James
This two-day workshop will focus on the craft of writing short satirical humor pieces, such as you might find in McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, The New Yorker’s Daily Shouts, or Reductress. We’ll begin by considering works by humor writers such as Rian Konc, Mike Lacher, and Colin Nissan, and discuss important techniques for satire writers, such as timing, surprise, economy of language, juxtaposition between tone and content, and choosing the silliest words. We’ll use prompts and brainstorming protocols to inspire ideas and incite creativity. The second session will focus on honing your humor piece drafts and exploring options for publishing.

$120 Members/$175 Nonmembers
