A Business of Writing Workshop
This online seminar will help new authors make a plan to promote their books, with the aim of demystifying the joyful, confusing, and occasionally overwhelming world of debut authorship.
The seminar will focus on setting a realistic timeline, building a platform, promoting and marketing your book, understanding the publishing landscape, and managing your expectations. We’ll cover how to effectively use social media, the importance of good literary citizenship, strategies for garnering press and reviews, and planning readings/events. Participants will make an elevator pitch for their book, consider how to take advantage of their strengths, and make an individual plan of action.
+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur ONLINE via Zoom. Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the class.
+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).

Rebecca Turkewitz is a writer and high school English teacher living in Portland, Maine. She is the author of the story collection Here in the Night (Black Lawrence Press), which was one of Debutiful’s Best Debut Books of 2023. Her fiction and humor writing have appeared in The Normal School, Alaska Quarterly Review, Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading, SmokeLong Quarterly, The New Yorker’s Daily Shouts, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in fiction from The Ohio State University. She has been a resident at Hewnoaks Artist Residency and won a 2020 Maine Literary Award in the short works category. She loves cats, the ocean, and ghost stories.
