Navigating the Self through Writing Graphic Novels

A Generative Writing Workshop

ALL LEVELS

Graphic novels are a booming genre in book publishing. They have a capacity to be profound and visceral yet also immediately accessible and fun. What makes them so exciting to readers? How do they work? How can I make one?

Bestselling graphic novelist Tom Hart will guide you through a workshop where we'll take simple memories and activities and turn them into dynamic graphic stories. No artistic talent necessary, just a desire to try.

If you've written a diary entry, you can write a comic, and if you've written a comic, it's just a little leap to a big graphic novel.  We'll be looking at expert examples from Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), David B (Epileptic), Chris Ware (Building Stories) as well as examples from the beginning of comics in the early 1900s. Then we'll be trying our own...

Pencils and paper are all that's required.

+ PLEASE NOTE This workshop will occur online via Zoom. Students do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before their class if they are first-time users. The week of the workshop, students will be emailed a link that they may click to enter the test session and the class.
