A 5-Week In-Person Poetry Workshop
Thursdays: April 10 - May 8, 6-9 PM
Focusing on what brings you joy, each participant will develop their own list and accrue materials, including poems by other authors, related to each one of their five categories. Participants will be asked to write one poem related to each category--five, total--and be prepared to present them during the five-week writing workshop. (We will get to as many poems as possible during our fifteen hours together.)
Before you arrive on night one, have your five categories written down. Mine are food, walking, love, books, and hoops. I look forward to hearing yours and moving forward together.
Please keep the following "Points of Departure," all of which will be explained on night one and referenced throughout our session, in mind:
1. “Entering emotional spaces on terms that are original.” Tess Gallagher
2. The goal? New emotional knowledge…
3. “Ununsaid.” Samuel Beckett
4. “FEELthink.” Jorie Graham
5. “The human heart in conflict with itself.” William Faulkner
6. “Tell me what it means to be a man…so I know what it means to be a woman.” Toni Morrison
7. “Praise and lament (at the same time).” Stephen Mitchell on Rainer Maria Rilke
8. Every text is a spiritual text. Unknown
9. “A new music is a new mind.” William Carlos Williams
10. “Blood the abstraction.” Wallace Stevens
Bonus: “One key characteristic of sentimental writing is a blanket ban on humor. A single laugh, and the trance is broken.” Howard Jacobson
$275 Members/$475 Nonmembers
