Community Word for Veterans

A 9-Week Free Nonfiction & Auto-fiction Workshop for Veterans

Wednesdays, September 22 to November 17

AS YOU WERE

The veteran experience belongs to less than ten percent of the U.S. population. In that number are millions of voices at risk of disappearing to time. “As You Were” is a free writing workshop designed to develop these voices through the lenses of both nonfiction and auto-fiction and share them with others.

Instructor, Cody Mower, writes: “We need to normalize telling our whole truths so that both civilians and future warriors can learn from us and understand what it means not only to put on the uniform, but what happens after when it’s taken off.”

This 9-week course will provide a structured and supportive environment where Maine veterans will learn basic storytelling skills, generate new work, and revise select pieces for inclusion in a class chapbook that will be published at the end of the workshop.

+ PLEASE NOTE This class will occur online via Zoom. Attendees do not need to create an account to participate, but should test out Zoom before the class if they are first-time users. The instructor and MWPA staff will not have the capacity to help attendees with tech issues during the class.

+ REQUIRED EQUIPMENT A reliable, fast internet connection (broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE), speakers & a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in), and a webcam (built-in or USB plug-in).
