There is No Such Thing as a Standard Book Contract

  • Mechanics' Hall 519 Congress Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

A 1-Day Business of Writing Workshop

Saturday, January 11th, 1 - 4 PM

There are no glamorous or sexy or easy-to-understand book contracts.  Ranging from 3 to 40 plus pages, each publisher has their own "boilerplate", drafted by their own attorneys so are all geared to benefit the publishers.  And while most contain all major terms - from Rights and Territory, to Advance and Royalties, as well as Subsidiary Rights or Option, most authors I know (and  agent friends share that experience), DON'T read their contracts and so are sometimes shocked and annoyed to discover  - often too late - that a particular clause they signed stands in the way of their wanting to do something with their own work which the contracts do not permit them to do.

Having worked in publishing in contracts and as an editor (both in UK & US) and as an independent literary agent for over 50 years, I will cover - and we will discuss:

* Different types of contract (from publishing to foreign, from film to merchandising)

* Major terms of every contract and how to interpret them (The Authors Guild has a wishful Model Trade Book Contract with Commentary - it is 35+ pages long; I'll have a

   copy to share and provide links)

* Which terms to try and change (or ask your agent to change)

* Royalty payments and Statements

* Options

* Termination

$90 Members/$135 Nonmembers
