A children’s book author has about 500 words to tell an interesting, important, entertaining, and hopeful story—and yet the reader is only six years old!
Writing picture books requires specific skills and considerations unique to the genre. In this hands-on workshop, attendees will explore both the constraints and freedoms of writing for a very young audience.
Participants will be expected to bring a story idea to work on and share. The class will look broadly at narrative structure and voice in classic and contemporary children’s books—such as Owl Moon (Jane Yolen), Last Stop on Market Street (Matt De La Pena), and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson—and then zoom in to scrutinize word choices, rhyme and rhythm, and prose patterns. Participants will have time to begin drafts, based on prompts and their own ideas, and those who wish to share their work with the class will receive brief feedback.
Melissa Kim has worked in children’s publishing for more than twenty years, writing and editing for Scholastic, Children’s Television Workshop, Dorling Kindersley, Kingfisher, National Geographic Learning, Kids Discover, the Children’s Museum of Maine, and many others. For six years, she was the London-based editor of Current Magazine, a publication for European teenagers. The author of ten nonfiction children’s books and a bicycling guidebook for adults, she is currently the editorial director at Islandport Press where she loves to play matchmaker for some of New England’s most talented writers and illustrators.
