Fiction writers strive to create living, breathing people on the page. And real people have sex. In fiction as in life, intimacy can be uniquely revealing about the nuances of personalities and power dynamics in relationships. This workshop will provide a supportive, relaxed atmosphere for writers to improve their ability to capture those nuances in their own work.
Participants will conduct close readings of a variety of different sex scenes in fiction. Then, using a variety of writing prompts, they will write, share (if they wish), and edit their own intimate scenes.
Laima Vince integrates the craft of writing with the power of the unconscious mind to guide students to tap into their unique inner voice and write from a place of authenticity. Vince earned an MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts, and then a second MFA in Nonfiction from the University of New Hampshire. She is the author of a novel, This Is Not My Sky (forth coming from Noir Press, United Kingdom), and four works of literary nonfiction. She is the recipient of two Fulbright grants in Creative Writing and a National Endowment for the Arts grant in Literature. She has taught Creative Writing at the University of Southern Maine since 1998 and formerly was the Director of the Stonecoast Summer Writers’ Conference. She has led Creative Writing workshops in the United States, Europe, and Hong Kong.
