Carolyn Forché has written of the deep pleasure that arises from “the flow of language in patterns.” When Robert Frost named this flow “the sentence-sound,” he was not referring to grammar-book rules but to the way in which a poet arranges words to express a thought. Frost knew sentences in poetry are not simply blocks of meaning. They are also patterns of sound. They are a blueprint for working out what and how a poet thinks and feels. They are conduits for curiosity, paths into mystery.
In this workshop, participants will study how poets think about sentences as they delve into new work. Attendees will explore how poets such as Lucille Clifton, John Donne, Jane Kenyon, and others have chosen to fashion their sentences and then try out some of those techniques in their own new work.
Dawn Potter directs the Frost Place Conference on Poetry and Teaching, held each summer at Robert Frost’s home in Franconia, New Hampshire. She is the author or editor of seven books of prose and poetry, most recently The Vagabond’s Bookshelf: A Reader’s Memoir (2016). New poems and essays have appeared in the Beloit Poetry Journal, the Sewanee Review, the Threepenny Review, and many other journals in the United States and abroad. Dawn works widely as a visiting writer, leading classes for K-12 students, teacher development programs, and undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to writing, editing, and teaching, she sings and plays fiddle with the band Doughty Hill. VISIT dlpotter.blogspot.com
