For poets, all-meter-all-the-time leads to a lot of syllable counting. But when writers infuse just a hint of meter into free verse, their otherwise open forms gain something bracingly new in flavor, music, and rhythm. In this workshop, participants will do just that: experiment with writing free verse imbued with a whiff of meter.
Instructor Megan Grumbling—winner of the 2017 Maine Literary Award for Poetry— will give a brief refresher on various metric feet, and the class will have some free-writing fun coming up with examples of short lines of each. The workshop will also discuss poems that play with meter in open form, by poets such as Merwin, Dickey, and Cummings. Then, participants will experiment with an array of exercises to craft new free verse poems that use doses of meter to add verve and depth to their refrains, turns, and voices.
Participants will leave this venture into poetic mixology with some tools, materials, and inspiration for infusing their favored poetic voice with something surprising, aromatic, and uncommon.
Megan Grumbling is the author of the Vassar Miller Award-winning poetry collection Booker’s Point. Her poetry has been awarded the Ruth Lilly Fellowship and the Robert Frost Foundation Award, and has appeared in Poetry, Crazyhorse, The Iowa Review, Memorious, and elsewhere. She is theater critic for the Portland Phoenix, serves as reviews editor for the poetry journal The Café Review, and is librettist of the new spoken opera Persephone in the Late Anthropocene, which premiered last spring.
