It’s easy to get stuck: same reading + same habits = same writing. This is an in-depth, multipart poetry workshop focused on reading a wildly diverse collection of contemporary poems together and starting new, groundbreaking work.
Each week for five weeks, participants will read and discuss provocative poems published in the last five years, putting their fingers on the pulse of what’s happening in poetry right now. They will investigate these readings for inspiration and craft. Participants will also experiment and begin new pieces of writing in class.
The focus of this workshop is generating new material—the class will only offer feedback on brand-new drafts in-progress, emphasizing encouragement and experimentation. The final session will be used to workshop some of this new work, and participants will emerge with a new suite of poems to take into the revision process.
Gibson Fay-LeBlanc’s first collection of poems, Death of a Ventriloquist, was chosen by Lisa Russ Spaar for the Vassar Miller Prize and published in 2012. The book received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, spent several weeks on the Poetry Foundation’s list of contemporary best-sellers, and was featured by Poets & Writers as one of a dozen debut collections to watch. His poems have appeared in magazines including Guernica, The New Republic, and Tin House as well as on the PBS NewsHour’s Art Beat, and appear in recent issues of jubilat, Slice, and The Literary Review.
