I would love to join or start a writer's group in the Bangor area--any takers?
God Bless you Robert. Dorothy was so right in the Wizard of Oz,"there is no place like home." I too have moved closer to my husband's and my parents. I have only my Mom and my husband has his father, both elderly. I wish you well in your decision. Your post was heartwarming. Not whining at all. Best to you, Launa
Hello Maine Lit Community!
I thought all of you would be interested in hearing that David Schmahmann, author of the award-winning novel Empire Settings, will be in Kennebunk at Kennebooks on December 12th, 11AM to discuss and sign his new novel, Nibble & Kuhn.
Nibble & Kuhn made its debut on November 1st and is receiving a lot of attention. The novel is a satire of the law, and follows two newcomers—and paramours—at a proper corporate law firm as it comically tries to rebrand itself for the Google era; exposing the deep disaffection people feel about the practice of law and the seemingly irrational way in which it is often applied.
Robert B. Parker called it a "wonderful story brilliantly told." Robert Dugoni, New York Times best selling author of Wrongful Death, called it "riveting drama I could not put down." (Actually, he said it was "like watching a man drive toward a cliff ... wondering how it could possibly end well, with a twist you couldn't possible predict.") Other reviewers have described it as "wickedly funny," a "skewering of law firm life," and "a pure page turner that evokes both anger and laughter."
A native of South Africa, David Schmahmann is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Cornell Law School. His first novel Empire Settings (“unexpected, even unforgettable” – The Washington Post) was optioned for a movie by Daniel Wilson Productions. David still practices law in Boston, and lives in Weston, Massachusetts with his wife and daughters. David will be discussing his new book and his interesting journey of transitioning from lawyer to writer.

Book Title Contest
I am offering a $500 prize for naming my book. I had originally come up with a title: YOU CAN ACHIEVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND IMPROVE YOUR LOVE LIFE TOO. It has been suggested that this is not the best title. You can get the rules, a couple of chapter excerpts and a detailed synopsis of the book by requesting the contest package by going to marriagecoach1@yahoo.com. Just be sure to put contest in the sub line. Thanks John Wilder
Mia; when do you meet? I work in Portland and could meet after work. I can be reached at rpandlp@xpressamerica.net. Ron
How about a booksigning in front of the fireplace, a Maine artisan craftsman planing split cane to make a beautiful bamboo fly rod, good cheer and good will?
My husband David and I will be in immersed in the holiday at LL Bean's Flagship Store Saturday December 5th at 1 pm. Copies of "Changing Planes" will be available, and we'll both demonstrate the making of bamboo fly rods, planes in hand.
We'd love the company!

NEWS FROM THE WHINERY
Boy, it's hard to be thankful this year. The economy is in the crapper. The weather is changing for the worse. And, most of all, I'm 3000 miles from my Mom and Dad.
I don't know why this year is any different than the other forty or so Thanksgivings I've been away from my parents home. It just is, somehow.
I think one of the reasons is that I've decided to move back to Maine next year and I'm subconsciously counting the days. I had made this decision earlier this fall after a 'too close for comfort' car accident in San Antonio. This brought into perspective just how vulnerable we were. I have, in my cocky, self centered way, been living under the illusion that I could handle anything that came up. I had done all of the research, make the proper arrangements, and covered all of my bases before and during our sojourn to Mexico. All of my planning was for the care of my wife. Medical care, housing, domestic help, creature comforts, these things I planned for and provided with some success. What I so blindly avoided was the possibility that something could happen to me. I didn't plan for an unthinkable event that would leave me unable to continue being the full time care giver and protector of the person who relies on me for everything.
Another thing that makes me more melancholy this season than in others is the reality that, at 85 years old, my parents have only a few more seasons for me to be with them. It seems strange that I so easily postponed, canceled, ignored, or rationalized away so may holidays during the past few dozen years. And now, seemingly all of a sudden, I need desperately to be with them. I think I'm just lonely. It is discouraging, sometimes, to live in a community where I am the outsider, and knowing that no matter what I do or for how long I live here, I will always be the outsider. The gringo with the exorbitant (by Mexican standards) income without needing to labor. The hombre who doesn't speak Spanish but expects everyone to understand him. How pitiful I sound.
I just realized how selfish I seem, pathetic really. Me, me, me. Well I guess in an essay intended as an expression of feelings the focal point should be the author.
On an up note, we are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for the people here in Mexico who have become our friends. Our neighbor and landlady and her live-in “friend” will be here. They spent all afternoon taking over the cleaning of our furniture and hanging new flower baskets outside. Also attending is our housekeeper and her two teenage daughters as well as the boyfriend of one of them. This is the group I use to celebrate my milestones. They joined us for my latest birthday and when we went out to a restaurant with our friend, Brian, who came from England for a visit. Yep, that's correct. Two times in two years. (sounding pitiful, again)
Largely because of television, the people here in Mexico know of and understand, at a rudimentary level, what Thanksgiving Day is and what it is meant to celebrate. They see President Obama pardoning a turkey and smile without really knowing the symbolism. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is watched with the same anticipation of Santa's arrival as in the States. The children at the market who want to practice speaking the English they are required to learn tell me how George Washington saved the Indians from the British and that is the true meaning of Thanksgiving. I want to correct them but their story is more interesting than the one I learned when I was their age.
So, later today I will roast the Butterball I bought in Texas, candy the carrots with just a hint of chilies , mash up the sweet potatoes with some of the maple syrup we took off the table at the Cracker Barrel restaurant last summer in Fort Worth, and prepare the Pepperidge Farms stuffing mix according to package directions. I'll stuff the celery stalks with cream cheese and olives, plate the pickles and cranberry jelly, and warm the store bought pumpkin pie while we eat. Carolyn and I will know the symbolism of these dishes. And I'll beam as I offer the Thanksgiving blessing for the first time as a minister of God.
And, I'll smile to myself in the awareness that I have so much to be thankful for that I am ashamed for whining so in this essay.
May the blessing of Jesus the Nazarene be upon you and yours today, tomorrow and all of the tomorrows to come. Happy Thanksgiving.

Bridgton News did a nice review of my poetic memoir, Pondicherry Square. Not available online but a nice review.
wondering if anyone knows of a writing group in the midcoast area that is accepting new members?
Longfellow Books in Portland. turned out about 20 people for my book signing event of 9/24 and I moved about 15 or so copies of Unnatural Deaths. Not sure how many MWPA members were in the audience since none identified themselves as such and I neglected to ask for a show of hands. I advertised the novel in most of the free shoppers' weekly newspapers from York to Mt. Desert Island during the summer- the cost per thousand is surprisingl low. Also put an ad in the November edition of Down East which touts Maine products as Christmas gifts. This edition reaches 100M people. Should get my first sales report and check by October 1 - hope to make enough to pay for a couple of tanks of oil this winter.
Hello Jennifer: How is your group going? Are you open to new members. Is anyone interested in a writing group in the Biddeford-Saco area after 5 p.m.
Please check out my website, launamcneilly.com. I'm hoping to hear from some veteran Maine writers with any advice they have on book promotion.
Something has happened to Lewis Turco's website, and I just cannot find it any more. I hope all is well.
Congrats to you Launa McNeilly! I'm looking forward to reading your book. I'm a published poet, and am currently in the middle of my own novel. Best wishes to you in the future!

Hi, this is just a little addendum to Bob Fuller's Sept. 8 posting: I believe you meant to write that Longfellow Books is on Monument Way.
Folks, I forgot to tell you the date of the book signing, so my previous post, alas, wasn't extremely helpful. That date is September 24. If you want a peek at a synopsis of my novel and read a couple of reviews, check out my web site, www.unnaturaldeaths.com.
Longfellow Books on Marginal Way in Portland will be hosting a book signing event for Unnatural Deaths, my Maine-based mystery/police procedure novel. Starts @ 5 PM or thereabouts. If you decide to show, please ID yourself to me as a fellow member of MWPA!

My primary focus is on Maine. My photography is also featured. I hope members will consider reading the articles - I'd love your support. The articles have been featured locally in the "Top Five," which is one of our goals, as well as in the "Most Popular" category. Thank you in advance for reading my column!

Are you looking for a copy editor?
I moved to Portland a few months ago. Before I came, I worked at a newspaper and small magazine in Kansas City, Missouri, and I am still the copy editor of the magazine (Celebration) on a contract basis via the Internet. However, I’m interested in branching out to do more freelance editing/proofreading work, either fiction or nonfiction.
Should you find yourself in need of a copy editor/proofreader and wish to contact me, I can be reached at erinryan45@gmail.com or through my Web site, www.interiorpassage.com. From the Web site you can link to some of my writing samples and to my resume (CV).
If you decide to get in touch, we can talk about your project, payment rates and file transfer protocol.
Thanks,
Erin Ryan

I may join your Portland group. I live about an hour North so I am unsure how often i could make your meetings but I am interested. If we get enough people together maybe we can form a roving group and meet in different locations throughout the year.

Hello fellow writers:
On the weekend of July 31st thru August 2nd, I'll be once again facilitating the "Write Meditation Retreat" at the Morgan Bay Zendo in Surry, Maine. We'll be exploring the creative writing process within a context of Buddhist meditation practice in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Whether you're an established or aspiring writer, there will be plenty of encouragement and inspiration for tapping into the currents of creativity and contemplation.

Hello everyone:
I just joined the alliance a few weeks ago and am eager to get involved and participate in events put on by the alliance, as well as meet other writers in the state. I was a research prof at UMaine for seven yrs, but got sick of many aspects of the job. My wife and I moved out of state in '07, but that only lasted ten months. Couldn't wait to get back to Maine. I'm now writing historical fiction having finished my first book. I'm in the process of seeking an agent and have started on the second one.
If you don't mind some shameless self-promotion, my book entitled Conditions May Vary: A Guide to Maine' Weather was released a few weeks ago. The publisher is Down East Books. Check it out on my web site with links at www.gazielinskibooks.com. It's my swan song for the sciences. However, if you use any aspect of weather, climate or geology in your books, I'd be willing to help out for a small consulting fee you could say. Just trying to get another aspect of my new life going.
Hope to get to meet some of you and looking forward to future workshops, meetings and the like. Drop me an email at gazielinski@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from other writers in Maine.
Best to everyone.
Greg

Hello fellow traveler:
My name is Robert Shand and I am asking for your help. It is my desire to return to Maine after many years away. I am looking for a position with a small non-demonational church where I can minister to the membership and the local community. I consider myself more of a teacher than a preacher. I offer spiritual guidance from a interpersonal perspective.
As well as being ordained through the ULC I am a former teacher, Child and Family counselor, and an experienced addictions recovery professional. I hold a Masters degree in Education Counseling from the University of Nebraska and I am soon to recieve my Ph.D. in Pastoral Counseling from Suffield University.
I DON'T REQUIRE A SALARY! All I require is housing (including ulilities) for myself and my physically handicapped wife and the assistance of someone to tend to the household chores and provide companionship and some minimal assistance to my wife.
For more information about me and my calling, see my virtual church web site http://freechurch.faithweb.com
I am also a published auther and some of my writing can be found in my blog http://mainemanabroad.blogspot.com
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.
Great fun!
For our Young Writers' Workshop this year, we invited our best 25 7th and 8th grade writers to attend a tailor-made event at The Telling Room. The good people there proved it to be the perfect choice, and the students (and six of our faculty) immersed themselves in writing, a rare luxury.
I'd highly recommend it!

I am looking for a writer's group in the Lewiston-Auburn area, and am wondering if the MWPA has ever coordinated with L-A Arts to bring literary events to the twin cities.

I need someone from the greater Portland area who is an experienced editor of fiction. If I can find the right person I will hire him/her to edit my novel.
I would like some assistance in writing a biography on one of Maine's local radio/t.v. personalities. He is also involved in the Govenment of Maine. He has been approached to write a biography before, but with his schedule did not have the time. Unfortunately, his health has taken a turn. He had some routine surgeries scheduled. Through an error by his physician's office staff, which they had admitted to, he is now in a more critical health situation. I have known him and his family for over 10 yrs. If he agrees, I would like to write his biography. My training is two yrs. at Beal College for Medical Office, with a GPA of 3.43. If someone could be of assistance to guide me as to where to start and who to contact, I would greatly appreciate it. I can be reached at Brewergal1@Yahoo.com. My home address is 32 Cottageville Rd., Orrington, ME 04474. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Donna Brown

Hello, again. Writing to provide an update on the progress of my recently released story collection, The Body of This, (Warren Machine.) You can visit my website, andrew-mcnabb.com for a complete list of the reviews, interviews, etc., or the publisher's website for the book, www.thebodyofthis.com; but if there was one review I would check out, it is this one (particularly the comments section, where the debate about the book is quite heated:) http://insidecatholic.com/Joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5834&Itemid=48
Hope you can pick up the book.

Dear All:
Perhaps someone has, or can refer me to someone who has a cabin I could rent occasionally. Not fussy -- just a quiet place to write for a few days every so often, without distrctions.
Thank you,

I am most pleased to become a member of MWPA. I intend to be very active because I need so much help. My non-fiction book, Cornucopia of Evil, explains how I changed my career of a small town banker to a "documentalist". After 30 years as a documentalist my mission now is to teach others how to provide this laudable service to all types of tragedy victims. I hope to have the final edition of my book released by fall. I welcome any questions and comments. My website is: thedocumentalist.com

Trying to determine is self publishing is the way to go for my memoir. The time period involves a week in college when I depart on a wild motorcycle ride. The book is divided into days, and personal reflections on growing up in Maine are added to each days adventure. The first day I leave Wyoming for Utah and nearly die, twice.
Available soon:

Frost Place scholarship news:
Note that the scholarships cover attendees who are "geographically challenged." Apply! Tell your colleagues to apply! There's money!
NEA GRANT -- NEW SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Through the Town of Franconia, The Frost Place has gratefully received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a "Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grant." This is the first grant of its kind made by the NEA in the state of New Hampshire during the past four years. The NEA offers this type of support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. The grant provides support for the Frost Place poetry conferences in general, and in addition, funds four scholarships for qualified conference attendees.
Applicants for the NEA scholarships will first need to apply for admittance into one of the Frost Place conferences. On your application, please indicate if you would like to be considered for scholarship assistance. Upon acceptance, please send an email letter citing need and qualifications to the attention of Deming Holleran, at rfrost@ncia.net. You will then be informed about whether you qualify for this or one of the other Frost Place scholarships.

I am very excited to announce the publication of my first book, The Inspired Garden: Twenty-Four Artists Share Their Vision. It has consumed much of my time for the past 5 years but it has introduced me to some of the most extraordinary artists in New England and gained me access to their magnificent gardens. The publisher is Down East and the launch of the book will coincide with an exhibit of the artists' work at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. The exhibit runs through April and May with the opening/launch date on Saturday, April 18. Several of the artists will present talks starting at 1:00 pm and the party begins at 3:00 with free admission for the events. More information is available on the Gardens website, www.mainegardens.org. For more on the book visit www.downeast.com.
