I am a Maine native and graduate of Portland High School (Salutatorian, Class of 1984). I was a Wall Street executive for a dozen years who decided to pursue writing full-time in 2008. I wondered if in October I could organize a discussion regarding weird variants of cancer and their after-effects. I wrote a memoir NOWISH: A LIFE OUT Of TIME. too many pink ribbons, not enough research.

Greetings all. I am a metal fabrication supervisor with a construction company here in NewEngland. Having worked successfully in this position for about 4 years now, and for over 20 in the craft, I have developed a fairly unorthodox management style. I say unorthodox because the conclusions drawn in most of the books I've read on the subject are, in my experience, full of conventional wisdom and therefore incorrect. I am looking for a writer interested in helping me to produce a book. My number is 207-590-9644. Thank you.

Join the Kismet Inn and the Wife of Bath at our first co-sponsored Book Author's Tea as we welcome San Francisco Bay-area author, Kathy Briccetti to the City of Ships. Kathy will read from her recently-published memoir BLOOD STRANGERS as you enjoy aromatic tea and light refreshments. Books will be available for purchase, and signed by the author. Tickets for this event are $12 at the door, or in advance by calling 207-751-2414, or by visiting www.wifeofbath.net.

Words of praise for Blood Strangers - “Blood Strangers reads like a novel and spins from the heart, examining three generations of children fatherless by choice or chance with a mother's loving eye and a writer's chiseled prose.” —Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean

"Blood Strangers" is a story of hard earned wisdom, forgiveness, and the unending search for self. In our culture of absent fathers, it fills in a vivid spot in the mosaic."—Mark Matousek, author of The Boy He Left Behind

“Abortion and adoption, stepfathers and sperm donors, birth mothers, marriage and divorce - it's all here in BLOOD STRANGERS, a fine and fascinating memoir about the complicated love between parents and children in a modern American family.”—Beth Harpaz, author of Finding Annie Farrell and The Girls in the Van

Katherine A. Briccetti s work has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies. She was awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2009. She earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley and an M.F.A. in creative writing from the Stonecoast program of the University of Southern Maine. She works as a school psychologist and writer/editor in the San Francisco Bay Area. An excerpt from Blood Strangers was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2007. She can be reached at kathybriccetti.com.

Steve Burt's novel, FreeK Camp: Psychic Teens in a Paranormal Thriller, has won the Best Beach Book Award for Teens (www.beachbookfestival.com) at the NY Book Festival. The story is set in and around Bridgton, Maine. Burt was a member of MWPA through the 1980s and 1990s, then moved to Connecticut. In 2004 he won the world's top dark fiction prize, The Bram Stoker Award, for his collection of (mostly) Maine weird tales, Oddest Yet. Last year the Rev. Jeanne at Georgetown Historical Society

June 8, 2010

Writers of all ages and experience levels are invited to share their particular interests at Roscohegan: An Island Workshop for Writers, a one-day event on Saturday, July 17 from 10AM to 3:30 PM at the Georgetown Historical Society. For more than a century, Georgetown (known as Roscohegan to the Native Americans who hunted and fished here) has drawn artists, photographers, and writers to its shores. Its natural beauty inspires creativity and its history and island culture provide a sense of solitude and deep connection to people and place. The first part of the day includes an inspirational, leisurely stroll along Robinhood Cove led by keeper-of-local history and storyteller Gene Reynolds and lunch with artist and author of over 30 books, Dahlov Ipcar. After lunch, author Eve LaPlante (American Jezebel, Salem Witch Judge) will share her journey from journalism to historical non-fiction. Participants will then have a choice from three workshops: editor Lynn Betlock discusses writing family history articles; authors Jane Freeberg (A Scallop Christmas) and Emily Herman (Hubknuckles) share their experiences about writing for children; and poet Nancy Arbuthnot leads a session for writers of poetry. Attendees have the option to participate in all or only some of the day's activities.

Space is limited. Pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, June 30, 2010. A fee of $10 includes lunch and other refreshments.

For more information, call 207-371-9200, send an email to info@georgetownhistoricalsociety.org, or consult the GHS website at www.georgetownhistoricalsociety.org for a registration form and details about the workshop.

Are there any writers groups anywhere in the Houlton / Lincoln / Millinocket area ? I am serious need to an objective '3rd eye'' reviewer. Any replies will be very helpful.

anonymous404

April 25, 2010

Help: this needs to be anonymous for good reason. post reply here if you know anything please... I will check back often.

Does anyone remember seeing a story like this on the local TV news, somewhere between 2000-2006? (landshark threatens to evict citing “not to carry on any business...” against a writer)

It was an argument about the meaning of a phrase in many leases:
"not to carry on any business, profession, or trade of any kind."
It is usually not enforced without a good reason, but one company chose to use this legalism against a writer, implying that having a product available on a web site violated this verse, and threatened to sue for eviction and payment of the rest of the year's rent. The name [removed, because I need to know for sure] seems familiar, but I'm not really sure why. I remember a comment on the show something like: this was a foolish thing to do even if it succeeds in court, because people would find out what happened here, and nobody would want to rent an apartment from that company*. (at least anyone who is a novelist, songwriter, poet, etc.)

She (the writer) ended up removing her book from the website, finish out the term of her lease without the freedom to have her work available, because she did not want to risk eviction and ruined credit, if she might lose the case. (heard this on the show)

At least I hope this kind of zero tolerance policy is extremely rare. If it were common practice, I would have found a story like that on Google by now (literally spent all-night sessions rephrasing this dispute over 100 different ways!). I believe this is a form of predatory lending, and infringement on the freedom of speech and press.

I am definitely interested in finding a copy of this broadcast if possible. I can understand if the footage is lost... in that case I am searching for someone who remembers the show well enough to reliably identify the parties involved. I figure my chances are better asking now than later.

It's also quite unbelievable and sad that even in the Tivo age, information that was on broadcast TV can become forgotten and disappear, when it effects something this important.

I may be interested in talking to the writer that was threatened. Maybe a petition could be named after her. - if something like that ever happens again.

(“13 on your side” seems most likely, yet Ms. Ichton claims not to remember this- maybe a similar series on another station?)

* - I intend to help make this prediction happen.

In this age of scrambling to constantly be your own PR and marketing team, reviewers like Bill are literally a gift. You took the time to throughly examine all angles of the novel and I thank you!!

Jean Davison, author

April 1, 2010

I have completed a creative non-fiction work on an Iraqi girl born in 1880 in Mosual, who decides she wants to become a French sister, prompting a journey that takes her across the Syrian Desert in a camel caravan, then over the mountain of Lebanon to Beirut where she boards a steamship for Marseille. After training as a herbalist, a crisis in France forces her and three other Femme de la Sagesse sisters to leave for the wilds of southern Africa and a mission in Malawi where they find plenty of surprises.

I am looking for a mentor, versed in fiction narrative, to review "Mother of Fire," with a critical eye. I will be in Maine, beginning May 18th - Oct. and can be reached at 207-326-4272 in Brooksville. My number here is: 512-389-0595.

Many ups and downs in completing my first book but Mystery of the Dancing FireWalker will be available from AuthorHouse.com within two weeks. This is the first of at least four fictional/mystery novels I have called the Emily Jacobs Mysteries. Book 1 is about two children kidnapped and taken to a cabin in western Maine. Involving an ancient stone circle, a shaman, and several really neat bad guys, the children must partake in several healing ceremonies. In the meantime the two mothers must visit several sacred sites throughout Maine to collect the four elements. Must reality of my own experiences withing natural history, mythology, archeology, and healing circles is included throughout this wonderful read... and the Coyote Stories will keep you guessing.

I am looking for poets SERIOUS about writing and REVISING their work. So many groups I've joined just want an "atta boy" clap on the back and don't want to dig in and LEARN what to do after the poem is written. I crave others who want to critique. I am sick of groups with a lack of guts to revise.

I am in the Midcoast. Find me online at www.heartsoundspressliterary.com

What percentage of the U.S. population actually reads books anymore? What would you guess? I've always hovered around the 15% mark (grimly). But according to the latest Verso Ad Network's extensive 2009 Consumer Book Survey--28% of the US population are "avid readers,", spending 5+ hours a week with a book, and the 65+ age group is twice as avid as those who are 25-34.

The Maine Sunday Telegram calls THE GHOST TRAP a "good mid-winter read."

The Ghost Trap tells the story of a 27-year-old lobster fisherman faced with huge challenges. Jamie Eugley is the caretaker of his brain-injured girlfriend, Anja. He feels guilty because the accident that rendered her helpless happened on his boat. His life is further complicated when fellow lobstermen start cutting one another's traps in a territory dispute.

Wordsworth Typing and Transcription Services

January 19, 2010

Please spread the word that we're a local business out of Bath, ME. We do typing from handwritten manuscripts and transcription from recordings. We do interview transcription as well as focus groups, panel discussions, and conferences. We also can type handwritten journals, memoirs, and collections of letters to preserve family history. We do most of our work over the internet, but it would be great to work with some local Maine writers!
