What is flash creative nonfiction? Is it different from prose poetry? Is it different from writing micro-essays? How do you keep it short while making it meaningful? What do you do with it after you’re done?
Get In, Get Out will begin with a discussion and examples of the flash creative nonfiction form and working, as a group, to understand what it is. The group will then move into writing pieces of their own, which will then be shared, discussed, and critique; sharing will be optional. Prompts will be available, or participants are welcome to use their own material.
This workshop will focus on: tight revision, making an image pop quickly, choosing details carefully, crafting a narrative arc in a short space, and selecting material that works well in this form. The session will close with tips for submitting and publishing pieces of flash creative nonfiction.
Penny Guisinger is the author of Postcards from Here, which is a memoir collection of micro-essays, an Assistant Editor at Brevity Magazine, and the founding director of Iota: Short Prose Conference.
