One could theorize that some of the most exciting poetry from any part of history or the world manages to walk the line between chaos and control, concision and surprise. A little purposeful sloppiness can be a great way to enliven, embolden, and deepen the heart of the “well-crafted” poem.

In this one-day workshop, participants will look at examples of poems that excel at this balancing act and succeed in uniting the mess with the measured. They will discuss the contemporary “elliptical” poetry aesthetic, and make new poems from a series of exercises designed to get them ranging more freely in their poem-writing.

*NOTE: This class will not be workshopping poems in the traditional sense; no previously written poems will be critiqued. Instead, the class will be drafting new poems, trying out new modes and techniques, and turning off those inner censors. Come ready to write!
