Writers spend hard-earned hours crafting elegant descriptions to conjure multi-sensory experiences for their readers, but if the details employed do not add texture to character or help move the plot along, the work may fall short of its mark.
Attendees will spend the morning exploring ways to deepen the use of details in their prose: naming, gesture, description, and motif. In addition to reading two short stories in advance of the workshop by Jhumpa Lahiri and Raymond Carver, participants will be guided in class through excerpts from pieces by Anthony Doerr, ZZ Packer, Joy Williams, and other contemporary fiction writers.
After examining the pearls and perils of abstraction, attendees will generate short passages to practice new skills from prompts, which the instructor will give feedback on during an open reading portion in the afternoon.
