Here in Maine, National Poetry Month is serious business! This is a list of just some of the amazing events and readings in April 2017.


TUESDAY, APRIL 4 at 7 PM Third annual Community Open Mic Poetry Night at York Public Library. Teen poets invited and guest readers. All are welcome. No pre-registration required. Sign up at the door. Light refreshments served. INFO

FRIDAY, APRIL 7 at 7:30 PM The Belfast Poetry Festival hosts “Bird & Bulldozer,” a symposium on belonging/displacement, ecology, and writing from a sense of place, featuring Gary Lawless, Kristen Lindquist, Mihku Paul, Stephanie Wade, and Thomas R. Moore at the Belfast Free Library. INFO

SUNDAY, APRIL 9 at 2 PM The Ninth Annual Back Cove Contemporary Music Festival presents a National Poetry Month concert mixing music and words at SPACE Gallery in Portland. $12 for MWPA members. INFO

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12, 5:30 PM In honor of National Poetry Month, the Southwest Harbor Public Library will present Poets Bearing Witness in an Age of Polarity: Speaking Truth to Power. Poets Crow Suncloud, Diana Newman, Paul Weiss, and artist-poet Robert Shetterly will raise their voices in poetry and song. INFO

FRIDAY, APRIL 14 at 7 PM Martin Steingesser and Dave Moreau read poetry at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell. INFO

SATURDAY, APRIL 15 at 10:30 AM The Dorcas Library in Prospect Harbor hosts a poetry open-mic poetry reading. All are welcome. INFO

SATURDAY, APRIL 15 at 4 PM Gulf od Maine Books in Brunswick hosts a poetry reading with Sally Bliumis-Dunn reading from her latest collection, Galapagos Poems and Kristen Lindquist reading from her new book of poems, Tourists in the New World. INFO

TUESDAY, APRIL 18 at 7 PM Maine Poet Laureate Stuart Kestenbaum and Portland Poet Laureate Gibson Fay-LeBlanc host “I Know You Are Reading This: Poems of Compassion” at SPACE Gallery in Portland. Readers and performers include: Hanen Mohammad, a young poet and alum of The Telling Room’s Young Writers & Leaders Program; poet and longtime Bates professor Robert Farnsworth; poet and Beloit Poetry Journal editor Rachel Contreni Flynn; former Maine State Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl; and former Portland Poet Laureate, Martin Steingesser, who will perform a piece with Judy Tierney and Rudy Gabrielson. SATURDAY, APRIL 22 at 12 PM Poet Richard Banco signs at the Maine Land Conservation Conference at the Mt. Ararat Middle School and Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham. INFO

SATURDAY, APRIL 22 at 4 PM MWPA “New Expressions” Workshop participants, Gretchen Berg, Marcia Brown, Wendy Cannella, Deborah Crimmins, Barbara Ryland, Megan Shea, Craig Sipe, Bill Varner, and Betsy Whitman present a group reading with introductory remarks by Betsy Sholl for Local Writers at The Local Buzz in Cape Elizabeth. Presents more than 30 well-known and emerging poets, UMaine student poets, Poetry Out Loud winners, and musicians at the Bangor Public Library. This year’s theme is “Origins: Roots & Sources” in conjunction with the Library’s Smithsonian exhibit on “Exploring Human Origins.” INFO
